7.4 Recording Studio Recap!

Well folks, we survived!

I have been struggling with just how to sum up our experience at Sonic Ranch this entire week. For many of you who followed our photo, video and blog posts you know it was a "trip" to say the least. Where do we begin?? Using an iPhone to get out of a ticket, nine break downs and some amazing West Texas terrain only sums up the first day of our trip to Tornillo, TX. It seems that we managed to blow the fuel pump 400 miles into the trip ending in Colin and Nathan literary pushing the van the last 100 yards into the studio complex. Thankfully, we crossed into Mountain Time Zone and somehow only ended up being an hour late. Josh had his fair share of griping to do but stepped up to the plate and not only tracked two songs the first night but had the remaining takes complete in time for lunch the next day. Chris was next to bat and so the process began.

From that point on, the days really seemed to blur together in some strange way. Every morning started around 8:30am with an authentic complimentary breakfast of your choice (the breakfast burritos were not only a favorite but, out of this world). We would then find our way through the Hacienda courtyard, past the grape vines, baby Raccoon (aka Portugal) and into our new temporary home, Studio A. In the 5 room studio surrounded by gear that can only be imagined in a dream, the songs began to come alive in a way I don't think we could have ever imagined. Layer by layer each tune began to show it's true colors. Soon, we had the routine down and before we knew it...our week was over and it was time to head home. Oh wait...where's the van? $600 later and several parts I am somehow convinced we didn't need, we finally had our wheels back and were on our way back to Austin. I can speak for everyone that our time at Sonic Ranch was definitely surreal. Spending your days with professional musicians and Producers who have worked with just about every legend you can imagine, really made for an incredible experience. More importantly, we have a record that sheds an entirely new light on The Canvas Waiting. Each song is full of so much emotion and layered with such intricacies that we can really only let the songs speak for themselves.

In closing, we once again want to thank everyone for the integral roles they have played in this process. Each donation, album pre-order and just simple words of support have made this record possible. We can not wait to share this new collection of songs with each of you! As we wrap up the final touches, stay tuned for more information on the release of 'Chasing Color!'

3.26 SXSW Recap!

What a fun and crazy ride it was again this year at SXSW...all of us dudes in TCW had a great time performing, partying, seeing some of our favorite bands, and seeing new acts we had never heard of...some highlights included Metric, The Constellations, Pearl and the Beard, Meeting Chris Kirkpatrick (yes, from N'Sync, see below), Casiokids, Alphabeat, Macy Gray's Arcade Fire cover, The Kin, The Constellations again, Fool's Gold (twice as well), The Morning Benders, Snoop D-O-double-G, Minus the Bear, Miike Snow, Pet Lions, Big Science, BBU, Rockie Fresh, the list could go on and on....

We also had a fantastic time at our showcase for AEMMP Records. We were super stoked for them to have us play, and the show was a great success...much thanks to everyone who came out. Not to mention everyone we met from AEMMP was super nice and accommodating! Check out a few pics from the show, courtesy of Keith Peters and Van Blumreich.

3.09 SXSW Showcase!

n24636739244_2249377_3829691

It’s official. a-fish-ul. AEMMP Records and Austin’s own, The Canvas Waiting are teaming up at the AEMMP Records SXSW party! Resounding in the release of their second album, A Season’s Change (2009), The Canvas Waiting, fronted by Nathan Medina on guitar and vocals, Josh Rodgers on drums, and Colin Campbell on lead guitar and Chris Applegate on bass, will share the stage with AEMMP Artists, Big Science and Pet Lions!

The guys aren’t strangers to the big stage, having shared it with acts such as The Format, Mute Math, and Matt and Kim. The guys have been spotted as Do512 Austin-local featured act, Purevolume Featured Artist, and it don’t hurt having praise from Indie Vision Music -

“each of the songs had a very distinct feel to it. This doesn't come off as disjointed but rather works well to showcase the band's diverse set of musical skills. It's refreshing that each song can stand or fall on its own as opposed to them all being basically variations of each other”

You can catch The Canvas Waiting at AEMMP Records Day Party on March 20th @ 12pm! Give their songs a go, and don’t be bashful, hit them up on their Myspace and Twitter!

9.15 The Canvas Waiting Kicks Off Another Great Night at Momo's!

--courtesy of @do512_Grace via do512 blog--

Every Thursday in September, Austinites have the opportunity to witness one of the best local lineups we’ve seen. For the past nine years, Momo’s has prided itself on hosting, supporting, and encouraging Austin’s most talented and creative musicians through its highly acclaimed residencies. With performances by The Canvas Waiting, Will Evans Project, Derrick Davis, and Slow Down Lady, the bill at Momo’s for this Thursday, September 17, truly raises the bar.

The Canvas Waiting is an Austin-based group with a well-deserved reputation for delivering a genuinely passionate and inspiring performance. Singer Nathan Medina’s unmatched vocal talent serves as the perfect vehicle for The Canvas Waiting’s striking words and simple melodies. The group’s lyrical boldness combines with their catchy blend of folk and alternative rock to create sincere works of peace, honesty, and hope. They go on at 8pm – don’t miss ‘em!

Later in the evening you can hear Austin native Derrick Davis, a singer/songwriter with a true gift for performing. His high-energy, rhythmically driven tunes never fail to have the audience singing along by the end. Following Davis is the bluesy, americana rock band Slow Down Lady. When you have a front-woman like Abby Peck gracing the audience with her phenomenal voice, you can’t go wrong!

Do512 is giving away some FREE TICKETS for this show! For a chance to win, click “I Like It!” on the event listing at Do512.com. Don’t miss out on this awesome lineup!

6.05 Yet Another Change in Season

As many of you may already know, Eric Salzman is no longer playing guitar for The Canvas Waiting. I want to thank him publicly for everything that he did for the band and for being such a good friend. I assure everyone this was an amicable split, as Eric is now the proud father of another beautiful baby girl. Being the stand up guy that he is, he needed to focus on his family and decided that he wouldn't be able to give the time necessary to the band. We wish Eric the best and if you see him at a show in Austin be sure to go up to him and say hi.

On the bright side, we have recruited Colin Campbell as our new guitar player. Colin is a good friend of ours and his transition into the band made a lot of sense. Aside from being a great guitar player, Colin brings a lot to the table that I think will be extremely beneficial to the band(excluding his ability to make the girls swoon). He has played four shows with us thus far and they have all gone very well.

We are all very excited about this new chapter in the band and we want to thank you for your continuous support!

-Nathan
